Turtle Spawning in Ostional beach
Today we share with you this beautiful image of turtle spawning at Ostional beach.
Turtles are true survivors, they have inhabited the planet for more than 100 million years, but in recent decades they have been threatened by humans, and are in danger of extinction. Of the 7 species of sea turtles, 5 of them can be found in Costa Rica. This is why the spawning of sea turtles is of great importance in the country to preserve the species, and at the same time promote healthy tourism in balance with nature.
At Ostional Beach, located at the Nicoya peninsula, Guanacaste, there is one that provides protection mainly to the Kemp’s ridley turtle (Lepidochelys Kempii) in which thousands of sea turtles arrive simultaneously. This arrival occurs mainly between the months of August to December, and precisely at the end of October the second most important massive arrival usually occurs. It is a great mystery how so many thousands of turtles agree at the same time to arrive at the same beach, on some occasions up to 100,000 females have been counted in a few days.
However, this number is not to lower your guard, out of every 1000 eggs approximately only 1 turtle reaches maturity. Arrivals usually generate a significant influx of people, so it is necessary to see them safely, without causing stress or intervening in the process. Definitely, having the opportunity to see these beautiful animals is a great experience in life so if you have not lived it, we recommend doing it.
