Tenorio Volcano
The Tenorio Volcano is a volcano located in Costa Rica, in the Cordillera de Guanacaste. It is located on the divide between the provinces of Guanacaste and Alajuela, 6 km northeast of Cañas, and is located in a picturesque and fertile valley, known as Bijagua. Its highest summit reaches 1916 meters above sea level.
The Tenorio structure consists of four volcanic peaks and two twin craters. It is covered by savannah in the lower parts, rain forest in the middle, and cloud forest in the upper parts. From the west skirt flows the Tenorio river and from the south the Tenorito and Martirio. From its top you can see the plains of Guatuso and San Carlos, Lake Nicaragua, the Caño Negro Reserve and Lake Arenal. The Frio River meanders from its slopes.
The volcano is known for its hot springs (with temperatures up to 94°C) and bubbling hot springs. Volcanic activity is composed of fumaroles and hot waters. At the foot of Tenorio there are large macadamia plantations. Also on its slopes is the Celeste River, known for its light blue and transparent water; many waterfalls on the way with crystal clear and clean water are part of said volcano.
Since 1995 the volcano is part of the Tenorio Volcano National Park, one of the newest national parks and is part of the Arenal Tempisque Conservation Area (ACAT). It is possible to reach the crater in a day hike, the ascent starts in the surroundings of Agua Caliente (access by route 927), on the southwest face of the volcano. The route to the top is 13 kilometers long (round trip) and has a vertical drop of 1,090 metres. The path is not difficult and is well signposted. The route crosses much of the local rain forest and reaches the edge of the Tenorio craters.
